The Gordon Richards at Sandown looks a straightforward five-runner Group 3 on paper, but the race shape suggests otherwise. There is a glaring absence of a natural front runner, and both Comment Shaper and Timeform point towards a steadily run contest. In these tactical affairs, positioning often trumps raw ability.

HRB’s TimeWise Master ratings are typically very reliable in races like this, with Rank 1 (Saddadd) and Rank 2 (King Of Cities) accounting for the majority of winners historically. Saddadd in particular appeals as an improving type, already proven at Sandown and finishing his races strongly. However, that strength could be neutralised here if the pace collapses into a sprint finish.

King Of Cities brings solid Group 3 form and also profiles as a strong finisher, but he shares the same tactical concern — likely to be played late in a race that may not suit hold-up tactics.

That brings the focus onto Devil’s Advocate, who stands out from a pace perspective. One of the few runners likely to sit prominently, he should get first run in a slowly run race. The reapplication of cheekpieces and a solid recent second at Kempton add to his case, while the Gosden yard has a good record in this contest.

Almeric is respected as the Timeform pick, but his lower HRB rank and likely positioning leave him opposable at short odds.

In a race where tactics could decide everything, Devil’s Advocate is taken to outmanoeuvre his rivals.

Verdict: Medium confidence
