4.50 Kilbeggan – Kabylia can strike in a winnable handicap

This looks a race to keep simple. The HRB TimeWise Master ratings have Kabylia clear at the top, and that is where the focus should be. Rank 1 has the best historical strike-rate, and in these handicaps it usually pays to start there rather than trying to be too clever.

Kabylia has the strongest overall profile in the field. She is top-rated on HRB, has bits of solid Irish form in the book, and her latest Fairyhouse run is easy enough to forgive. Timeform’s view that she may have needed that return makes sense, and this looks a more suitable chance back in a big-field handicap. She also shapes like one who should be able to travel into the race from midfield rather than getting detached in a contest with no obvious strong pace.

The Comment Shaper angle is useful here. There is no clear front runner, only moderate early pressure, and the collapse risk is low. That means a lot of the stronger hold-up horses could need things to fall perfectly. Kabylia’s style is less risky than some of the deeper closers, and that gives her an edge.

Desert Haven is the obvious danger as the HRB Rank 2 and comes here after a better run than the bare result suggests at Fairyhouse. Chanceawetmorning is respected on his first start for Gordon Elliott, while McLoughlin is the interesting improver in first-time cheekpieces and tongue strap.

Even so, the percentage call is straightforward. Kabylia is the one with the best blend of ratings strength, race fit and upside.

Selection: Kabylia
