3.30 Sandown – bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase
This is a cracking staying handicap and the key is not to overcomplicate it. HRB TimeWise puts Resplendent Grey top and Havaila second, and that immediately narrows the race. Historically, the top two in these ratings are where most winners come from, so anything ranked lower needs a very good reason.
Resplendent Grey is last year’s winner and clearly respected, but his recent form is patchy. He was well beaten in the Ultima and now has to bounce back under top weight. The return to this marathon trip is a plus, but he does not arrive with the same solid feel as last year.
The one I prefer is Havaila. He is progressive, arrives in peak form, and has won his last two starts impressively. Comment Shaper marks him as a strong late finisher, and that fits the profile of a horse still improving as a staying chaser. He stays, jumps soundly, and the Gary & Josh Moore yard has a good spring record.
The slight concern is pace. Comment Shaper suggests only one weak front runner, meaning the race may not collapse. Hold-up horses can be disadvantaged over this trip at Sandown, so Havaila will need to be close enough turning in. That keeps confidence in check.
Rock My Way is the pace danger. He should be handier and stays all day, but he is ranked only third and has jumping risks.
Selection: Havaila
Danger: Rock My Way
Strength: Medium
