3.20 Nottingham – Phoenix Moon still the one to beat
This 6f Class 6 handicap looks the sort where it is easy to overcomplicate matters, but the sensible starting point is Phoenix Moon. She sits clear at the top of the HRB TimeWise Master ratings on 293.4, and that is a major positive in a race of this nature. Rank 1 in these figures has the best historical win strike-rate, so the burden of proof sits firmly with the rest.
There are, however, a couple of caveats. The first is surface. Phoenix Moon’s four wins have all come on the all-weather at Lingfield, so she still has to show she can be just as effective on turf. The second is race shape. Comment Shaper points to a very weak pace scenario, with no confirmed front-runner and little early pressure. In theory, that could make life harder for a hold-up filly who does her best work late.
Even so, she remains the most likely winner. She arrives in form, she has the strongest overall recent profile in the field, and her rating edge is significant. In a modest race, class and current condition often matter more than tactical perfection.
The main alternative is Orbital Chime, who is the only meaningful saver from an HRB perspective as Rank 2. He has been knocking on the door and Timeform also gives him a solid mention. King David is the pace angle horse and may get a soft time of it near the speed, but his losing run and weak turf record temper enthusiasm.
The call is straightforward: Phoenix Moon is the selection.
Strength of selection: Medium.
