2.15 Lingfield – No Nonsense Verdict
This is a weak Class 6 staying handicap and, as is often the case at this level, it doesn’t take much to win it. The key is not to get seduced by messy profiles and instead stick close to the numbers—while knowing when to bend the rules.
On pure HRB TimeWise Master ratings, Regally Blonde comes out on top. Normally that’s a major positive, given Rank 1’s strong historical strike rate. The problem here is obvious: a 6-month absence and a couple of poor efforts to end last season. Backing cold horses in this grade is risky business, and he looks opposable.
Second-ranked Everest doesn’t convince either. She’s inconsistent and stepping up markedly in trip, which raises serious stamina concerns. In races like this, doubtful stayers are easy to swerve.
That brings us to Balgowan, ranked third but with far more going for him than the two above. His latest run over course and distance stands out—he was unlucky not to win, caught too far back in a steadily run race. The Comment Shaper flags him as the strongest finisher in the field, and that aligns with what we saw visually.
The race shape is interesting. There’s a possible lone front runner in In The Post, which could make this tactical. That’s not ideal for hold-up types like Balgowan, but equally, this field lacks quality and it won’t take much for the race to fall apart late.
Laravie is the danger—unexposed on the Flat, visor back on, and stepping up to a more suitable trip. Charles Morin is another solid player who should run his race.
Even so, Balgowan has the strongest recent piece of form and fewer questions to answer.
