3.50 Epsom – Great Metropolitan Handicap Preview

This year’s renewal of the Great Metropolitan may only have five runners, but it’s a race where tactical nuance will decide the outcome rather than raw ability alone.

The starting point has to be the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, which clearly point towards Topteam (Rank 1) and Sing Us A Song (Rank 2). Historically, that’s the sweet spot, and there’s little incentive to go hunting outside those two without a compelling angle.

The Comment Shaper adds an interesting layer. On paper, there are two front runners and a reasonably strong early pace projection. However, in such a small field, these scenarios often fail to fully develop. Timeform reinforces that view, suggesting the pace may not be strong enough to bring the closers into play.

That is a crucial point. Horses like Asgards Captain and Night Breeze are identified as strong late finishers, but both are reliant on a proper pace collapse. With only five runners, that looks far from guaranteed.

This brings the focus firmly back to Topteam. He arrives here as a progressive type who resumed winning ways at Kempton and has already shown he can dictate from the front. If allowed to control the tempo, he becomes extremely difficult to pass — especially at a track like Epsom where positioning is key.

Sing Us A Song is respected as the main danger. He showed improvement after a gelding operation and has a strong finishing profile, but the drop back in trip and lack of a recent run introduce small doubts.

In summary, this looks like a race where control of the pace is everything. Topteam is the most likely to get that control and, as a result, rates the most solid option.

Selection: Topteam (IRE)
