4.05 Southwell – Jack Andrea still the one to beat

This 1m4f Class 6 handicap looks likely to be run to suit a horse who can sit handy enough, travel, and finish off strongly. The Comment Shaper summary points to a very strong shape, with high collapse risk and only one likely front runner in Lednikov. There are plenty of prominent racers around him, which should ensure a proper test and put the emphasis on stamina and finishing effort late on.

That immediately brings Jack Andrea into focus. He is the clear HRB TimeWise Master Rank 1, and that matters. Historically, the top-ranked horse is where most winners come from, and in this race he is clear of Tupero, with Night Bear next best. That is the right starting point, and there is enough in the form to back it up.

Jack Andrea is thriving. He has won three of his last four starts, including two here at Southwell, and last time he beat Arth’s Gold over this course and distance. Before that he edged out Night Bear over 11f. He is holding his form, acts well on the track, and Comment Shaper also flags him as a strong late finisher, which fits this likely race setup nicely.

Tupero is the obvious danger. Timeform narrowly prefers him and he is still lightly raced, so there may be more to come. But the pace forecast is not ideal for him, and while he is a solid alternative, he does not have Jack Andrea’s proven Southwell profile.

Eagles Whistle is respected for a new yard and should stay on well, while Arth’s Gold has a headgear change with cheekpieces back on. Both have place claims, but neither makes more appeal than the selection.

This looks a race where the right answer is also the obvious one.

Selection: Jack Andrea
Confidence: Medium
