The Grade 1 Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown presents a tight, tactical contest rather than an all-out war, and that distinction could prove decisive.
The Comment Shaper data points to a single front runner in Eachtotheirown, with only limited pressure behind. That suggests an even tempo, not the searching gallop often seen at this level. In these conditions, positioning and tactical speed become more important than outright stamina, slightly reducing the advantage of hold-up closers despite a field packed with strong finishers.
Against that backdrop, the HRB TimeWise ratings provide a clear starting point. Sober heads the list as Rank 1, and historically that position delivers the highest strike rate. His profile is easy to forgive at Cheltenham, where the demands of the race looked to stretch him. Back at Punchestown, over a sharper trip and on more suitable ground, he is expected to bounce back. The booking of Paul Townend, who boasts an excellent record at the track, only strengthens the case.
Koktail Brut sits second on the ratings but looks slightly vulnerable. His recent Grade 2 success came in a race that fell apart late, and he had been behind El Cairos at Cheltenham prior to that. While solid, he does not bring the same upside in what could become a tactical affair.
El Cairos is the obvious danger. His fifth in the Supreme reads very well in this company, and he shaped like the best of the Irish that day. However, he sits only third on HRB ratings, and siding with him means going against a strong long-term trend favouring the top two.
In summary, Sober makes the most appeal on ratings, setup and conditions. He may not be bombproof in a competitive renewal, but he is the percentage call.
Verdict: Medium confidence.
