The 4.43 at Lingfield presents a compact but informative 5f handicap, where the focus should firmly remain on the top end of the HRB TimeWise Master ratings. Historically, this is where the winner comes from, and here the race revolves around Ancient State (Rank 1) and Micks Spirit (Rank 2).

From a race shape perspective, Comment Shaper points towards a strongly run contest, with two front runners in Micks Spirit and Spendmore Lane likely to inject early pace. That immediately raises a red flag for Micks Spirit, who, despite being a prolific course winner, is repeatedly noted for weakening late. If taken on for the lead—as looks likely—he may struggle to see it out.

This sets the race up perfectly for Ancient State, who brings a far more appealing tactical profile. A prominent racer with a proven strong finish, he should get the ideal tow into the race just behind the speed. His recent Southwell win, on stable debut for Adam Kirby, was visually convincing and backed up by the figures. A 6lb rise is fair rather than punitive, particularly given he remains relatively unexposed at the minimum trip.

Lequinto (Rank 3) is respected and arrives in form, but his hold-up style in a small field is a concern. He looks more likely to pick up minor honours rather than land the prize unless the race completely collapses.

The key question is whether the pace holds up. If it does, Micks Spirit becomes dangerous. But with multiple pace angles, the more likely outcome is a contested lead, favouring a stalker.

Everything points to Ancient State as the percentage call. He has the ratings, the run style, and the upward profile.
