The 6.05 at Punchestown, the William Hill Champion Chase, looks a fascinating tactical puzzle on the surface, but the data points us in a fairly clear direction.
Comment Shaper suggests a steady to moderately run race with the possibility of a lone front runner. That immediately raises the profile of Majborough, who is likely to be ridden prominently and could get first run. Timeform echo that view, noting a slowly-run race would suit those on the speed. However, there’s a difference between being favoured tactically and being the most likely winner.
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings are decisive. Il Etait Temps is a clear Rank 1, and crucially, he isn’t just marginally ahead — he’s well clear of the field. Given the historical strike rate of top-ranked runners, that alone puts him firmly at the head of the shortlist. Marine Nationale, the only realistic alternative on ratings, is solid but lacks the same recent dominance.
Il Etait Temps comes here off a commanding Cheltenham victory and has now won five of his last six completed starts. His profile is that of a horse at the peak of his powers. While he is typically ridden patiently, which could leave him slightly vulnerable in a tactical affair, his ability to travel strongly and quicken marks him out as the class act.
Majborough is the obvious danger if allowed an uncontested lead, but his jumping frailties and below-par run last time temper confidence. In a Grade 1 of this depth, those risks matter.
In the end, class should prevail over circumstance. Il Etait Temps has the best figures, the best recent form, and the strongest overall profile.
