7.20 Lingfield – HRB Angles Point to the Top Two
This looks a fairly typical Class 5 handicap where the answer should come from the top of the ratings, and the HRB TimeWise Master figures reinforce that view. As ever, the focus starts with Rank 1 Joseph and Rank 2 Penfolds Grange, who are clear of the rest on the numbers.
Joseph edges top spot and brings a solid all-weather profile into the race. His recent turf run is best ignored – he’s simply a different horse on artificial surfaces. Prior to that he posted a course and distance win and a strong second at Kempton, suggesting he’s in form and well suited to conditions. Tactically, he’s versatile enough to sit handy without needing things to fall perfectly, which is often key in these races.
Penfolds Grange is the obvious danger. Since undergoing a wind operation, he’s been notably consistent, finishing second on his last two starts. The step back up in trip looks logical, and Comment Shaper marks him down as a strong late finisher, which could be important given the race setup. However, there’s a nagging concern: he doesn’t win often and has developed a habit of finding one too good.
The race shape adds another layer. Romantic Spirit is the likely lone front runner, but the overall pace projection suggests she won’t get things entirely her own way. With moderate pressure and a solid overall shape, this could set up for a horse sitting just off the pace rather than a pure front-running steal.
That scenario suits Joseph perfectly. He may not have the flashiest finishing profile, but he keeps finding and is proven under these conditions. In contrast, Penfolds Grange may again be seen finishing well without quite getting there in time.
Selection: Joseph
Saver: Penfolds Grange
Verdict: Medium confidence
