4.33 Pontefract – Lightening can strike again

Small-field handicaps at Pontefract often turn tactical, and this looks no different. The Comment Shaper data couldn’t be clearer: no recognised front runner, very weak early pace, and a low chance of collapse. In simple terms, this is likely to develop into a steadily run race where positioning will matter more than raw finishing power.

That does raise a concern. The two standout horses on HRB ratings — Bearwith (Rank 1) and Lightening Company (Rank 2) — both tend to be ridden patiently. In a race lacking pace, that’s not ideal, and it opens the door, at least in theory, for something ridden closer to the speed to steal a march.

However, it’s rarely wise to ignore the numbers. The TimeWise Master ratings strongly favour the top two, and history backs that up — the majority of winners come from this pair. When there’s a clear gap, as there is here, discipline is key.

Lightening Company gets the nod. His recent course-and-distance win is a major plus — Pontefract is a track where course form counts, and he clearly thrives here. That latest effort produced the best last-run figure in the field, and Timeform are firmly in his corner, highlighting his strong record at the venue.

Bearwith is solid and arrives in good form, but he may find himself needing luck in a race that might not suit his run style. Of the rest, Dubawi Time is interesting from a tactical angle, but he simply lacks the ratings to be a confident play.

In the end, this comes down to trusting proven class over hypothetical pace advantages. Lightening Company ticks the most boxes and is taken to follow up.

Verdict: Lightening Company – Medium confidence
