4.40 Southwell – Keep It Simple, Trust the Ratings
Class 6 handicaps are not the place for overthinking, and this 1m contest at Southwell is a perfect example. The temptation will be to get clever with “strong finishers” or perceived value, but the data points firmly in one direction — stick with the top of the HRB rankings.
The race shape, via Comment Shaper, shows a single front runner in Kessaar Power with only modest pressure behind. That suggests a controlled tempo and a low likelihood of a late collapse, which immediately tempers enthusiasm for the likes of Starshot, Pink Socks and Mavetheforcebewivu, all flagged as strong closers. They may pass beaten horses, but winning looks unlikely.
This brings us straight to the ratings.
Kondratiev Wave sits clear at the top of the HRB TimeWise figures and, crucially, brings recent winning form to the table. The return to 1m is a slight question at the age of nine, but this is weak opposition and he has the tactical versatility to adapt. With Oisin Murphy booked, there’s little ambiguity about intent. In races like this, that combination of rank, form and jockey is often decisive.
Ring Of Gold, the Rank 2 horse, doesn’t convince as a serious win threat. He’s inconsistent at the start and all his winning has come over 7f, raising doubts about this trip. He looks more of a place contender than a selection.
The only potential fly in the ointment is Borderline Madness (Rank 3), who is expected to improve for a recent run and has solid course form. However, siding with her means going against a strong historical bias towards the top two in the ratings.
In the end, there’s no need to complicate matters.
Kondratiev Wave is the percentage call.
Verdict: Medium confidence
