The 4.30 at Redcar looks a straightforward race on the surface, but the layers underneath tell a more precise story if you stick to the data that actually matters.

The starting point has to be the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, where Ammes and Fierce Fortitude dominate at the top. Historically, most winners come from the first two ranks, and this race fits that mould perfectly. Everything else is already fighting an uphill battle.

The pace map from Comment Shaper adds an interesting twist. We’ve got a strongly run race expected, with only a weak front runner and plenty of pressure just behind. That should ensure an honest gallop, possibly even setting things up for a late closer if it collapses. Urban Road fits that bill on paper, but there’s a clear problem — he’s miles down the ratings. You can’t ignore that without taking a long-term hit.

So the focus returns to the top two.

Fierce Fortitude looks exactly the type you want to side with in this scenario. He’s unexposed, progressive, and comes here off a strong second on handicap debut. The Timeform notes suggest there’s more to come, and crucially, his run style is adaptable enough to cope with how this race unfolds. He doesn’t need everything to fall perfectly.

Ammes, the top-rated runner, is respected, but there’s a slight concern switching back from hurdles. He has the ability, no doubt, but may just lack the sharpness edge against a race-fit improver.

In races like this, discipline is key. Don’t overcomplicate it.

Fierce Fortitude is the pick, with Ammes the saver.

Verdict: Strong
