The 5.17 at Southwell is a typical low-grade staying handicap where the margins are thin and the race is likely to be decided by positioning rather than raw ability. The Comment Shaper makes that crystal clear: this is forecast to be a weakly run race with minimal early pressure, and crucially, no confirmed front runner. In these scenarios, those ridden handily often hold a significant tactical advantage, while hold-up performers risk being left with too much to do.
Despite that, the race still revolves around the HRB TimeWise Master top rank, and that brings us firmly to Yakhabar. He tops the ratings by a fair margin and, importantly, has already proven himself at Southwell. His win here in March came in blinkers, and the return to that headgear looks a deliberate and positive move after a respectable effort in a visor last time. That latest run was better than the bare result, suggesting he remains in form.
There are risks. His run style can be inconsistent, and he has a tendency to start slowly, which is not ideal in a race lacking pace. However, this is a weak field and he does not need to improve much to win. If he breaks on terms and secures a reasonable early position, his overall profile gives him a clear edge.
Nymphaea, ranked second, is the obvious alternative. She has solid course form and the step back up in trip suits, but she lacks the same upside and winning profile. Meanwhile, Bronte Beach is interesting from a pace perspective and could get an uncontested lead, though her low ranking tempers confidence.
In a race full of doubts, siding with the top-rated horse remains the percentage call.
