7.00 Southwell – Tactical edge points to the favourite
This 7f handicap looks ordinary on paper, but the race shape tells the real story. Comment Shaper flags a very weak pace scenario (0.69) with no confirmed front runner and just one likely prominent racer. That immediately shifts the focus away from the obvious late finishers and towards those who will be in position when it matters.
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings reinforce the usual pattern. Jimmy Speaking (Rank 1) and Commander Of Life (Rank 2) dominate, and historically the winner is very likely to come from this pair. The rest need to defy both ratings and setup.
Jimmy Speaking makes the most appeal. His recent Doncaster win showed clear progression, and Timeform’s view that he can defy a 4 lb rise looks fair. More importantly, his consistent prominent run style stands out in a field full of hold-up horses. In a race lacking pace, that is a major tactical advantage. He should be able to sit handy, control his position, and kick before the closers can organise themselves.
Commander Of Life is solid and arrives in good form, but his profile is that of a strong finisher who needs a proper gallop. With little early pressure expected, he may simply have too much to do late on.
The same concern applies to others like Packetofbiscuits and State Of Madness, both noted strong finishers in Comment Shaper. Their chance is tied to a pace collapse, which looks unlikely given the data.
In these tactical races, positioning is often decisive. Jimmy Speaking has that edge and ticks the key ratings box.
