The Longines Sagaro Stakes looks a straightforward Group 3 on paper, but the deeper you dig, the more this becomes a race shaped by tactics rather than talent.
The standout on ratings is Sweet William, comfortably clear on HRB TimeWise Master and rightly favourite. He sets the standard on last season’s staying form, including a Doncaster Cup win and strong efforts in elite company. However, there’s a catch. Comment Shaper and Timeform both point towards a very weak early pace, and that’s a potential problem. Sweet William has a habit of starting slowly and doing his best work late — a style that can be badly compromised in steadily run races.
This brings the focus firmly onto track position.
With no confirmed front runner and only limited prominent pace, this could easily turn into a sprint from the home turn. That scenario often favours horses ridden handier or those tactically versatile enough to adapt.
Enter Beylerbeyi, ranked 2 on HRB and still progressing. While he lacks the Group-level credentials of the favourite, he brings race fitness, a strong upward profile, and crucially, the booking of Ryan Moore. In a race lacking pace, Moore’s ability to secure early position could prove decisive.
There are dangers. Caballo De Mar is a proven Group 1 stayer but may find things happening too quickly. Tarriance could get a soft lead but has shown signs of not finishing off his races strongly under pressure.
Ultimately, this looks like a classic clash between class and circumstance. Sweet William is the best horse, but the race setup may not play to his strengths.
