This year’s 3.15 at Goodwood looks set to be run at a ferocious gallop and that has a major bearing on the outcome. The Comment Shaper data couldn’t be clearer: four confirmed front runners, strong early pressure and a high probability of a pace collapse. In these conditions, races are rarely won on the lead — they are set up for those delivered late.

The HRB TimeWise Master ratings point firmly towards Clearpoint (Rank 1) and Lexington Blitz (Rank 2), and historically that is where the winner usually comes from. However, both have notable vulnerabilities in the context of this race. Lexington Blitz is a habitual front runner who often weakens late, exactly the wrong profile given the projected pace burn-up. Clearpoint is more versatile but is still likely to be dragged into the early battle, and he also has something to prove back on turf after excelling on the all-weather.

This opens the door for a closer, and King Of Light (Rank 3) stands out as the one to capitalise. He is a strong late finisher, highlighted in the Comment Shaper with maximum late strength, and his running style—typically tracking or held up—fits this scenario perfectly. The application of headgear last season unlocked improvement, and there is a sense he may not have reached his ceiling yet.

Others such as Rosario and Rhythm N Hooves also fit the closing mould, but both come with limitations, particularly in terms of win strike rate and overall consistency.

In a race likely to collapse late, King Of Light looks primed to pick up the pieces and deliver a decisive challenge inside the final furlong.
