The 4.50 at Punchestown may only feature six runners, but it presents a clear and instructive puzzle when viewed through the HRB and Comment Shaper lens.
Everything begins with the pace. Comment Shaper identifies a single, weak front runner and limited early pressure. Timeform reinforces this, suggesting a steadily run race. In small-field Grade 2 contests, that often turns into a tactical affair where track position is crucial. Those ridden prominently tend to hold a significant edge.
Against that backdrop, Dinoblue stands out as the most solid proposition. She is the clear HRB TimeWise Master Rank 1, and that matters — historically, this rank produces the majority of winners. Her profile is rock solid: unbeaten in mares’ company in recent starts, a dominant winner of this race last year, and a comfortable victor over Only By Night at Cheltenham. Crucially, she is tactically versatile but likely to sit close to the pace here, which is a major advantage given the expected race setup.
Spindleberry, ranked 2 on HRB, is the obvious saver. A Grade 1 winner earlier in the season, she brings strong form and could get an uncontested lead. However, the “weak front runner” tag is a concern — she may not have the authority to control matters from the front.
Only By Night is the lurking danger. She finished second to Dinoblue last time and has a strong finishing profile, but her tendency to be ridden patiently could leave her vulnerable if the race develops into a sprint.
In truth, this looks set up perfectly for Dinoblue. She has the class, the tactical speed, and the ratings edge.
