7.10 Punchestown — FRS Fencing Handicap Hurdle
This is a proper big-field Festival handicap, but the shape of the race is clear enough. Comment Shaper points to a very strong early pace, with three likely front-runners and a high collapse risk. That makes this less attractive for the obvious pace horses and more interesting for runners who can sit off the speed and finish.
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings make Spirou very hard to ignore. He is ranked first on a huge total of 418.8, well clear of Whimsy in second on 316.2. Given Rank 1 runners are the main focus in this method, Spirou has to be treated as the most likely winner.
He won on his British/stable debut at Newbury after a long absence, picking up well late. That effort suggested ability, attitude and scope for more. The question is whether he can back it up quickly in a much deeper Irish handicap, but he has been given time and looks unexposed.
Whimsy is the obvious saver. She is second on HRB, has strong late-finisher signals, and the cheekpieces have clearly helped. This strong pace should suit her closing style.
Pioneer Pete is respected, but as a likely front-runner, he could be vulnerable if the race turns into the pace battle predicted. Spy also has a finishing profile that fits the race shape, but he ranks lower than ideal.
Equipment changes are worth noting: Saveforarainyday’s hood returns, Withabitofluk wears first-time cheekpieces, and Tatateo has cheekpieces refitted. There are also trainer changes for Positive Energy and Barrys Spirit.
After reassessing, the pace setup slightly dents Spirou, but not enough to oppose such a dominant HRB top-ranker.
Selection: Spirou
Saver: Whimsy
Confidence: Medium
