7.33 Newcastle – Tactical Race to Oppose the Favourite
This 7f Class 4 handicap looks straightforward at first glance, but the deeper you dig, the more it becomes a race to take on the obvious.
HRB TimeWise points firmly towards Recency Bias (Rank 1) and Pressures On (Rank 2), and historically that’s exactly where you want to focus. Around 50%+ of winners come from the top two ranks, so ignoring that edge is a quick way to the poorhouse.
Recency Bias is the sexy profile. Lightly raced, progressive, and impressive over course and distance two starts back. However, his handicap debut last time was underwhelming. More importantly, Comment Shaper flags a key issue — there is no obvious pace in this race. In a steadily run 7f at Newcastle, prominent racers can easily get caught out, especially if forced to do their own donkey work.
That’s where Pressures On becomes very interesting. His recent Doncaster run is better than it looks on paper, and his Wolverhampton efforts prior to that mark him down as a horse in form. Crucially, his tracked pace style is ideal for a race lacking a true front runner. He should get a perfect tow into the race and be first to strike when things lift.
The Green Man (Rank 3) is respected. He’s ultra-reliable here and comes with strong finishing data, but a low collapse risk tempers enthusiasm. He’ll be finishing, but may simply run out of road again.
The rest look either out of form or lacking the upside required in this grade.
In summary, this is less about finding the best horse and more about finding the right horse for the setup. Pressures On ticks more boxes than the favourite in that regard.
