The 3.35 at the Curragh (Athasi Stakes) sets up as a fascinating tactical contest, but the data and race shape are pulling slightly in different directions.
On the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, this is fairly straightforward. Drop Dead Gorgeous sits clear at Rank 1, with Black Caviar Gold the only realistic alternative at Rank 2. There’s a sizeable drop to the rest, and historically that matters—most winners come from this exact bracket, so any analysis has to start there.
However, the Comment Shaper flags a major complication: a very strong early pace with three front runners and additional pressure behind. The collapse risk is high, which typically favours hold-up performers. That brings outsiders like Pollenca, Killashee Warrior and Alphecca into the conversation, all noted for strong late finishing.
The problem is class. These closers may get the race run to suit, but they still need to bridge a gap in raw ability against fillies who have already shown Group-level or potentially top-class form.
Drop Dead Gorgeous looked out of the ordinary on debut, travelling powerfully and settling the race quickly. She’s completely unexposed and represents a yard that excels in these races. The key question is whether she can adapt tactically in what will be a much more aggressively run contest. If she settles just behind the speed rather than getting dragged into it, she has the profile to assert late.
Black Caviar Gold is the solid alternative. Her reappearance can be excused (lost a shoe), and the addition of cheekpieces is a notable move. She brings experience and proven form at this level.
In the end, class edges it over chaos.
