3.40 Beverley – Handicap Blog
This 5f Beverley handicap looks competitive, but the shortlist should stay tight. The HRB TimeWise Master ratings have Yellow Diamonds ranked first and Alfa Duplicate ranked second, and that top-two bias is always where I want to begin.
Yellow Diamonds is respected. She was progressive last season, won at Musselburgh, and Julie Camacho has a good recent record in this race. The issue is the draw. Timeform flags a strong bias against high numbers and she is stuck out in stall 16. First run for a new yard after 215 days off adds another question.
That pushes me towards Alfa Duplicate. She is second on HRB, arrives race-fit, and has the most solid recent profile. Since being dropped to sprint trips she has improved, winning twice on the all-weather before running another sound race at Southwell. She also scores well enough on Comment Shaper, where she is noted as a strong late finisher, which matters in a race with a strong pace forecast.
The race shape is interesting. Comment Shaper finds no confirmed front-runner, but several want to race prominently, so this could still be run hard. That makes horses who weaken late vulnerable. Showtown is third on HRB and has first-time cheekpieces, but his prominent style could be dangerous if they go too hard early.
The closers are threats. Believeinmenow is drawn low, has been finishing well, and should enjoy a strong gallop. He is the main danger if the race collapses late. Come On Over also finishes strongly, but slow starts remain a concern.
After reassessing, I cannot fully trust Yellow Diamonds from the widest draw, despite her top HRB rank. Alfa Duplicate looks the best balance of rating, current form, draw, pace suitability and reliability.
