4.45 Curragh – Apprentice Handicap (7f)
This is a race where the pace map does the heavy lifting. Comment Shaper flags a very strong shape with high collapse risk, and that immediately puts the focus on horses who can sit off the speed and finish late. With Methgal and Pinar Del Rio likely to force it, this could set up perfectly for closers.
The ratings back that up. Carrigans Grove heads the HRB TimeWise Master figures, narrowly ahead of Comfort Line, and that top two dominance is not something to ignore. Historically, most winners come from this bracket, and in a race like this, it becomes even more relevant.
Carrigans Grove looks tailor-made for the scenario. His run style is ideal — usually tracking the pace before finishing strongly — and Comment Shaper highlights him as one of the best late finishers in the field. His recent run at the Curragh over 6f on heavy ground can be upgraded; he was never really positioned to strike but shaped as if needing it. Back on better ground and up to 7f, there is every chance he improves.
The obvious question is stamina. He has done most of his winning over 6f, but nothing in his profile suggests 7f will stretch him, especially off a strong pace.
Comfort Line is the logical saver. He arrives in form and also fits the closing profile, but as a 9-year-old coming off a win, he is not the percentage play to follow up in a competitive field.
Of the rest, Go Out is interesting with headgear tweaks and a pace angle in his favour, but he lacks the same solidity on turf.
In a race likely to fall apart late, siding with the top-rated closer makes the most sense.
