The race revolves around the top of the HRB TimeWise Master, and that is usually the right place to start in a 2yo non-handicap like this. Adonius is the clear Rank 1 on 397.9, with a healthy edge over Wait Geordie on 375.6, and that immediately puts him in the strongest historical slot. Given past results, Rank 1 should be the default win selection unless there is a compelling reason to oppose.

Timeform backs that up. Adonius has already won twice over 5f at Musselburgh and the debut seven-length success screams raw pace. The latest win suggested he can absorb pressure and still finish. From stall 1 at Chester, that speed is a major asset, especially over the minimum trip where track position is everything. Timeform’s verdict is blunt: he “could take some catching from stall 1”.

The interesting wrinkle is the Comment Shaper. It flags a very strong shape, with four front runners and strong early pressure. On paper that could set things up for something stalking rather than forcing it. That creates a fair case for Wait Geordie or even Hickory Lad, both of whom look capable of travelling just off pace and finishing their races. Hickory Lad in particular appeals as the danger because Timeform says there is “more to come”, and his profile suggests he may cope if the leaders overdo it.

However, the same Comment Shaper also rates the collapse risk as low, which is important. So although there should be pace pressure, it may not be enough to fully undo the best horse with the best draw. That brings me back to Adonius.

Past winners suggest this race often goes to a smart, forward juvenile from a capable yard, and recent renewals have been won by horses able to hold a position early. No obvious equipment changes or trainer switches are noted, so there is no hidden angle there.

Selection: ADONIUS
Saver/forecast alternative: WAIT GEORDIE
Main danger: HICKORY LAD

Self-critique: the only real negative is the pace concentration. If they go too hard, Adonius becomes vulnerable late. But with Chester’s inside draw and his proven speed, he still looks the percentage call.

Confidence: Medium-Strong
Officially: Medium.
