3.05 Chester – Chester Vase (Group 3)
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings point firmly towards Water To Wine (FR), who sits clear on top as Rank 1 with a notably strong total (443.7). Given the historical edge of top-ranked runners in this dataset, that immediately makes him the focal point. His profile is that of a lightly raced improver, and the Gosden yard excels with this type stepping into Pattern company. The Timeform note labels him an “exciting prospect,” and his Newbury win over 11f suggested both class and stamina—ideal for this step up to 1m4½f.
The race shape adds further encouragement. Comment Shaper identifies a possible lone front runner scenario, but crucially also highlights a steady-to-even pace. Timeform explicitly notes that such conditions are likely to suit Water To Wine over Benvenuto Cellini, implying he may be better positioned tactically if this turns into a controlled race rather than a test of turn of foot.
Benvenuto Cellini (IRE), the Rank 2, is the obvious danger. Aidan O’Brien has an outstanding record in this race, and the colt’s Timeform mark (117p) signals high-class potential. However, he returns from a long absence and may just need this, especially if the tempo doesn’t play to his strengths as a strong finisher.
Of the rest, Del Maro appeals most for a place. He’s progressive and flagged as a strong late finisher, but may be vulnerable if the race lacks pace.
Self-critique:
The main concern with Water To Wine is experience—he’s far less exposed than Benvenuto Cellini and hasn’t yet faced Group company. Chester’s unique track can also catch out inexperienced runners. If the pace scenario shifts or becomes tactical, O’Brien’s runner could easily assert his class.
Verdict: Water To Wine is the percentage call based on ratings, pace, and upside.
