The starting point here has to be the HRB TimeWise Master, and it points firmly towards Temple Of Athena (Rank 1), with Alaminos (Rank 2) the only serious alternative. Historically that’s a powerful combination, and in a tight 3yo handicap at Chester, sticking to that discipline is usually rewarded.

Temple Of Athena ticks plenty of the right boxes. She’s a course winner, drawn stall 2 (ideal on the inside bias), and returns to handicap company after holding her own in better grade. Her profile suggests she travels well just behind the pace (TC), which is perfect given the very strong pace setup flagged by Comment Shaper. With two front runners and three prominent racers, this could easily set up for something sitting just off the speed — exactly her run style.

Alaminos is the obvious threat. His Pontefract run screams “unlucky loser”, and Timeform strongly supports him. He’s lightly raced, open to improvement, and tactically versatile. However, his unpredictable run style (P → TC → PS) and slightly lower HRB rank just temper confidence in a race where positioning is everything.

The pace angle adds another layer. Ruby’s Angel, drawn 1 and flagged as a strong finisher, is a danger if the race collapses late. However, she sits outside the top two HRB ranks, and backing those types over the long term is a losing play unless everything aligns perfectly.

Self-critique: there is a slight concern Temple Of Athena may not be improving as quickly as Alaminos, and if this turns into a pure late pace burn-up, something like Ruby’s Angel could swoop. But the draw + rank + course form combination is hard to ignore.

Selection: Temple Of Athena
Saver: Alaminos

Verdict: Medium
