1.30 Chester – CAA Stellar Handicap Blog
The 1.30 Chester looks a typically sharp and tactical five-furlong handicap where the draw could prove decisive. Chester’s sprint track heavily favours those berthed low, and the HRB Stalls Analyser strongly supports that view. In 11-runner races over this trip, stalls 1 and 2 have historically performed well, while double-figure draws are at a clear disadvantage.
That brings Roman Dragon firmly into focus. He is drawn in stall 3, has outstanding course form, and returns to the same handicap mark from which he won this race last year. His recent form figures are not attractive, but context matters. His latest Leicester run came over six furlongs and may have been needed after racing abroad, while Chester is clearly his happy place.
The Comment Shaper suggests a strong race shape with plenty of pressure around the pace. That should suit a horse who knows how to travel around this track and finish off strongly. Roman Dragon is not always straightforward tactically, but Oisin Murphy is a major positive booking and should be able to secure a handy pitch from the inside draw.
The main danger may be Seven Questions, who has stall 1 and is well treated, but his tendency to weaken late tempers enthusiasm. Dapper Valley is respected as the leading HRB-rated remaining runner and arrives in excellent form, though stall 9, a penalty and the rise in grade make life tougher. Stratusnine remains interesting on race shape, but his draw is not ideal.
After reassessment, the Chester specialists and low-drawn runners have to be upgraded. Roman Dragon ticks the most important boxes: course form, handicap mark, draw and jockey booking.
