2.35 Chester – Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes (Listed) Preview

The Dee Stakes has become a notable stepping stone for Aidan O’Brien’s middle-distance colts and the profile of this year’s renewal again points strongly towards Ballydoyle dominance. Recent winners such as Capulet, Star Of India and Mount Kilimanjaro underline the stable’s grip on the race, and Constitution River arrives with the strongest raw juvenile form on offer.

From an HRB TimeWise perspective, however, there is a fascinating clash. Morshdi is the clear Rank 1 on 453.9, comfortably ahead of the field, while Constitution River sits Rank 3 on 380.0. Historically, Rank 1 horses produce the best strike rate and should always command maximum respect. Morshdi’s Feilden Stakes win looked the performance of a colt progressing rapidly, and his profile suggests this extra furlong will suit well. His Comment Shaper profile is also ideal for Chester: prominent, tractable and a strong finisher. In a race where the projected pace pressure looks intense, that stalking position could prove perfect.

Constitution River is the obvious danger. Timeform’s assessment is compelling, particularly given the strength of the Futurity Stakes historically. Ryan Moore is a major booking and Chester’s tactical nature should suit his likely forward placement. However, Comment Shaper raises a slight concern: two confirmed front-runners and strong early pace pressure may leave him vulnerable late if he becomes involved too soon. There is also the Timeform note regarding his tendency to trade shorter in-running before finding less than expected.

Golden Story appeals as the potential improver. His Doncaster debut suggested considerable latent ability and K. R. Burke excels with progressive three-year-olds, but he lacks the experience of the principals.

After reassessing the race shape, ratings bias and historical trends, Morshdi narrowly edges the verdict. He combines the strongest HRB profile with race fitness, tactical versatility and a finishing style likely to suit how this contest unfolds.
