3.05 Chester – Ladbrokes Ormonde Stakes (Group 3) Preview
The Ormonde looks a fascinating tactical affair despite only eight runners. Comment Shaper suggests a genuinely strong pace with Rahiebb, Al Qareem and Sons And Lovers all likely to force the issue early. Chester’s tight turns can favour prominent racers, but sustained pace pressure over this extended 1m5f could set things up perfectly for a class horse with tactical versatility and a finishing kick.
From the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, the key point is clear: the race revolves around the top two ranked runners. Al Qareem is narrowly top-rated on 460.0, but Jan Brueghel sits virtually alongside on 458.3 and has significantly stronger pure class credentials. Given the historical edge enjoyed by Rank 1 and Rank 2 runners in these races, the winner is overwhelmingly likely to emerge from this pair.
However, deeper analysis slightly favours JAN BRUEGHEL (IRE). Aidan O’Brien has won four of the last ten renewals and saddles both market principals, but Jan Brueghel brings the standout Timeform figure (140) and already has elite Group 1 form. His Coronation Cup victory reads comfortably the best recent piece of form in the field. Importantly, Comment Shaper identifies him as a strong late finisher likely to benefit if the front-runners overcook the pace.
Illinois is respected, particularly as last year’s winner over course and distance, but his latest effort at the Curragh was disappointing and he may prove more vulnerable if lacking peak fitness after 235 days off. Al Qareem rates a major danger if allowed any control up front, though the projected pace battle tempers enthusiasm slightly.
Rahiebb is interesting as an improving four-year-old and could easily hit the frame, but this demands another sizeable step forward at Group 3 level.
Selection: JAN BRUEGHEL (IRE)
The combination of proven top-class ability, strong finishing profile and likely race setup makes him the percentage call.
