3.40 Chester – Xenon Workplace Handicap Preview
This looks a typically competitive Chester three-year-old handicap, but the race shape appears absolutely crucial. Comment Shaper points towards a very strong early pace with three confirmed front runners and several prominent racers likely to force the tempo. Around Chester’s tight 7f circuit that often creates pressure turning for home and increases the likelihood of late closers picking up the pieces.
From the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, Factual is the clear Rank 1 on 388.3, with Strength Of Spirit and Mcmurray next best. Given the historical edge of the top two ranks in these races, the focus should firmly centre around that trio.
However, the pace setup may work against Factual. He is projected to race aggressively and Timeform specifically notes the likely strong pace could shift the advantage away from him. Stall 9 is also not ideal around Chester where early position matters greatly. He remains progressive and Andrew Balding excels with handicap debutants, but this scenario may not be optimal.
The one who appeals most is STRENGTH OF SPIRIT (IRE). He ticks several important boxes:
Strong recent form figures.
Proven at Chester over course and distance.
Hold-up style perfectly suited to a possible pace collapse.
Gelding operation appears to have improved him further.
Excellent “Today” figure in HRB (55.3), notably higher than rivals.
Timeform pace notes directly favour him under the expected setup.
Mcmurray is the obvious danger and arguably the class angle. His Doncaster form reads strongly and he remains open to progression, but he returns from 213 days off and may just need the run in a fiercely-run tactical handicap.
At bigger prices, Aqua Bear and Monarch’s Gold are interesting late-running outsiders if the race completely collapses.
Verdict
Selection: Strength Of Spirit (IRE)
Saver: Mcmurray (IRE)
Value each-way: Aqua Bear (IRE)
The expected brutal pace combined with proven Chester effectiveness makes Strength Of Spirit the percentage call.
