4.45 Chester – Blog Verdict
This is a sharp 5f Chester handicap where draw and pace matter hugely. The HRB TimeWise Master rating puts Champonie clear on top with 390.6, a sizeable edge over Kolkata Knight on 332.1. Given Rank 1’s strong historical importance, she has to be taken very seriously.
The concern is race shape. Comment Shaper flags a very strong early pace, with five potential front runners and a high collapse risk. That may not suit the obvious speed horses, especially from wider stalls. Timeform also notes an extreme pace forecast and says this could favour Alvin, while making Kolkata Knight vulnerable.
Champonie is drawn 7, which is workable rather than ideal, and her profile is very attractive: unbeaten in two starts, still learning, and making handicap/turf debut for George Boughey. The HRB figure suggests she may be well ahead of her mark, and her “progressed/unlucky/strong finisher” Comment Shaper profile is a major positive if they go too hard.
Alvin is the obvious danger. He is Timeform’s selection, arrives off an impressive Bath win, is well-in under a penalty, and is identified as a strong late finisher. However, stall 11 is a serious negative over 5f at Chester, where the data strongly favours low/middle draws and is against high numbers.
Kolkata Knight is HRB Rank 2 and must be respected after a good return following gelding surgery, but stall 12 and likely pace pressure make him opposable for win purposes.
Past winners show this race often suits progressive, well-handicapped 3yo sprinters, and Champonie fits that mould perfectly.
After reassessment, the draw and turf debut stop this being bombproof, but the HRB superiority is too strong to ignore.
