1.30 Chester – CAA Stellar Great Cheshire Handicap
This race should be analysed from the top of the HRB TimeWise Master list, and that immediately puts Respond front and centre. He is Rank 1 on 402.2, clear of El Burhan on 373.4, and that matters because the top two ranks provide the bulk of winners in races like this. On the figures alone, Respond is the most likely winner.
The shape of the race is the only real concern. Comment Shaper identifies Respond as the lone front runner, but also flags a strong overall pace shape with moderate collapse risk. Chester can reward those near the pace, especially from a good draw, and Respond has stall 2, which is a major positive. He also arrives as an improving 4-y-o for Andrew Balding, whose yard has a good recent record in this race, and Oisin Murphy is an obvious asset. His recent Kempton third in the Rosebery reads well in this context, and the hood remains on after helping him settle better.
El Burhan is the clear alternative. He is Rank 2, shaped perfectly well in the same Kempton race when finishing behind Respond, and should come on for that seasonal return. The tongue tie stays on, he is proven at Chester, and his hold-up style could be dangerous if the pace does indeed get too hot. The issue is that Timeform itself notes hold-up horses are not normally favoured at this trip here, so he may need the race to unfold ideally.
Of the rest, Whip Cracker is respected with Ryan Moore booked, while Auld Toon Loon has excellent course credentials and was second in this last year, but he is only Rank 4 and the wide draw tempers enthusiasm. Bragbor is interesting as a late finisher from stall 1, though turf is still a question.
Self-critique: the pace map does introduce vulnerability for Respond, and Chester handicaps can punish even the right horse if pressure builds too early. Still, with the strongest rating, best draw, progressive profile and tactical edge, he remains the percentage call.
Selection: Respond
Saver/main danger: El Burhan
Confidence: Medium
