2.55 Ascot – Palmer & Co. Champagne Maiden Fillies’ Stakes

1m2f, Class 2, 3yo fillies

This looks a strong maiden for the grade, but the data points heavily towards the proven form runners rather than the debutantes. The key angle is the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, where Rank 1 horses win just over 30% of comparable 8-runner non-handicaps, with Rank 2 the only serious alternative statistically. That immediately puts the focus on Gone By and, to a lesser extent, Light Of Paris.

Main Selection – GONE BY (IRE)

Ralph Beckett’s filly ticks nearly every box. She is the clear TimeWise Rank 1 on 279.3 and holds a sizeable ratings edge over the field. Her Newbury debut reads extremely well: despite being very slowly away, she finished strongly to chase home a promising stablemate and pulled clear of the remainder on heavy ground. The Comment Shaper analysis also highlights her as the standout strong late finisher, which is important in a race lacking obvious pace.

The move up from 1m to 1m2f looks ideal on pedigree and run style. Timeform’s pace notes suggest the weak early tempo should not inconvenience her, and Rossa Ryan’s excellent strike-rate on favourites adds confidence. Importantly, this profile fits previous winners of this race — lightly raced fillies from top yards improving markedly from first to second start.

Main Danger – TARRANT (IRE)

Tarrant is the obvious saver. She is TimeWise Rank 3 rather than Rank 2, which is a slight concern historically, but her Newbury third came in what looked a useful newcomers’ race. She travelled professionally and stayed on strongly late. The extra trip should suit and Richard Hannon’s runners often improve sharply from debut.

Others

Light Of Paris has the Gosden/Buick angle and should improve for her Kempton run, but she weakened late there and may need another outing. Cool Girl is interesting on pedigree but lacks the statistical strength of the principals.

Verdict

Gone By (IRE) looks the most solid option on ratings, race shape and proven ability.

Confidence: STRONG
