4.45 Chester – Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap (5f)
This looks a typically frenetic Chester sprint with the draw, pace and track position all absolutely crucial. The Comment Shaper flags a Very Strong Shape with five front runners and a high collapse risk, which immediately points towards horses able to sit off the speed and finish strongly rather than those involved in an early battle for the lead.
From an HRB TimeWise perspective, Champonie is the clear Rank 1 on 390.6 and deserves major respect. She is unbeaten, progressive and unexposed for George Boughey. However, there are reasons to oppose her at a short enough price. Comment Shaper repeatedly highlights “PS” (poor start/slow away tendencies), and around Chester over 5f that can become a serious tactical issue, especially in a race loaded with pace pressure. She may need luck weaving through.
The race shape instead looks tailor-made for ALVIN (IRE), who is ranked prominently in HRB and receives a significant Timeform pace upgrade. Timeform specifically notes that the expected extreme pace could favour him, and his Bath success suggested a sprinter still ahead of the assessor despite a penalty. His “often finishing well” profile aligns perfectly with the projected race collapse. The wide draw is not ideal, but in strongly-run Chester sprints horses can sometimes swoop late if the inside pace burns itself out.
Proof also rates highly as a late finisher and could outrun his odds from stall 5, while Schrodinger’s Cat has an excellent low draw and attractive profile after his Thirsk return. The concern with both is whether they possess Alvin’s upside.
Self-critique: the biggest danger to Alvin is simply Chester geometry. Stall 11 over 5f is notoriously difficult, and if the pace does not fully collapse he could get trapped wide throughout. Champonie’s raw ability may simply overcome tactical negatives.
