1.28 Lingfield – William Hill Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes (Listed)

This small-field Oaks Trial looks tactically fascinating rather than strongly run, with both Comment Shaper and Timeform forecasting only a modest tempo. In races like this, positioning and class often become decisive, particularly when there is no confirmed front-runner to force the issue.

The first place to start is the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, especially given the excellent historical profile in 5-runner non-handicap 3yo races. Rank 1 has produced an outstanding 39% strike-rate from the last 1000 comparable races, massively outperforming every other rank. That immediately puts Romantic Symphony firmly in focus.

Charlie Appleby’s filly heads the ratings on 410.5 and arrives unbeaten after two visually impressive novice wins. Her Kempton success over 11f suggested abundant stamina, and her pedigree screams middle-distance quality being a sister to Yibir and Wild Illusion. Comment Shaper also flags her as a “strong finisher”, and in what could become a steadily-run tactical race, that turn of foot may prove decisive. William Buick is an obvious positive and she still looks open to significant improvement.

The main danger appears to be Bloom, the only realistic alternative based on the ratings model. Ranked second on HRB and already proven in Group company after her Navan third, she has the strongest finishing profile in Comment Shaper with a double-star late-finisher note. Timeform’s pace hint specifically states the expected weak gallop should suit her. The concern is Ryan Moore siding with Cameo.

Cameo is respected because of Moore’s booking and the likelihood this longer trip unlocks improvement, but HRB rank 5 is a notable negative historically. Prizeland looked useful winning here last time but must improve sharply from novice company.

Verdict

Romantic Symphony (IRE) looks the most likely winner. She combines the crucial Rank 1 HRB profile, elite pedigree, strong finishing signals and clear scope for progression in a race lacking tactical certainty.

Main danger: Bloom (IRE)
