2.40 Lingfield – William Hill Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3)
A fascinating small-field Group 3 where the pace map and the HRB rankings align unusually well. The key angle here is the projected race shape: Comment Shaper identifies a very weak early pace with a possible lone-front-runner setup, but importantly the overall pressure score remains low. That strongly favours horses positioned close enough to strike before the sprint develops.
From a pure HRB perspective, Royal Velvet is the standout. The TimeWise Master data is compelling: Rank 1 wins at a huge 34.7% strike-rate in comparable non-handicaps, and Royal Velvet tops the ratings clearly on 389.2. Her recent Newmarket win was visually impressive, travelling strongly before quickening clear in a big-field handicap. William Buick is operating at an excellent strike-rate on favourites and this mare appears to be thriving physically.
The main concern is tactical positioning. Comment Shaper predicts Royal Velvet as a hold-up horse in a steadily run race, and Timeform specifically warns that hold-up runners may be disadvantaged here. That tempers confidence slightly.
This potentially opens the door for Copacabana Sands, the likely beneficiary of race setup. She is not only Timeform’s pace angle horse but also arrives with strong Group form from Ireland and now debuts for Andrew Balding with Ryan Moore booked. Her tactical versatility is a major asset in what could become a sprint from the two-furlong pole. The hood returns and connections may have targeted this easier early-season Group race.
Dash Of Azure rates the clear second on HRB and is the obvious saver. Her Ascot Listed second reads very well, but she may again find herself too far back if the pace collapses fails to materialise.
Verdict
The race likely develops into a steadily-run tactical affair, which slightly weakens the usual hold-up strengths of Royal Velvet and Dash Of Azure. However, the sheer power of the HRB Rank 1 profile is difficult to ignore.
Selection: ROYAL VELVET
Saver: Dash Of Azure
Danger: Copacabana Sands
