3.15 Lingfield – William Hill Each Way Extra Handicap

7f 135y | Class 3 | Good to Firm

This looks a fascinating tactical handicap because the Comment Shaper flags a very weak pace setup with no confirmed front runner. In steadily run races around Lingfield’s turf 7f, tactical positioning becomes crucial and horses able to sit handy without wasting energy are often favoured.

The first place to start is the TimeWise Master ratings, particularly given the excellent historical edge of the top-ranked runners in this exact race type. Rank 1 wins around 25% of the time in these contests and that immediately puts Back In Black (IRE) firmly at the centre of the analysis.

James Fanshawe’s lightly raced four-year-old returned from a break with an excellent fourth in the competitive Spring Cup at Newbury, beaten only just over a length in a field of 24. That run strongly suggested he has more improvement to come from his current mark of 94. His HRB total of 373.3 is comfortably the highest in the field and he also brings the strongest blend of speed, jockey and recent-form metrics.

Comment Shaper also suits him. Although usually ridden from mid-division, this race lacks pace and Daniel Muscutt should be able to keep him closer than usual before utilising his proven finishing kick. He is labelled a strong late finisher and his profile screams “well handicapped”.

The obvious danger is Apotheosis, the clear Rank 2 horse. His recent Abu Dhabi second was solid and the addition of headgear has sharpened him up. However, he can be inconsistent and may be vulnerable if this turns tactical.

Of the bigger prices, The Dragon King makes some appeal. Timeform specifically notes that a steadily run race should suit him and he is one of the few likely prominent racers in the field.

Verdict

Back In Black (IRE) looks the most likely winner based on the combined strength of HRB ratings, recent form and race setup.
