3.30 Ascot – Royal Ascot Local Schools Art Competition Handicap

Saturday 9th May 2026

This intriguing five-runner 3yo handicap looks tactically fascinating, with both HRB Comment Shaper and Timeform strongly suggesting a steadily-run contest. The projected pace is notably weak, with no confirmed front runner identified, and that immediately places emphasis on tactical positioning rather than outright stamina.

From a ratings perspective, the race revolves around the top two on the TimeWise Master figures — a crucial angle given the historical data supplied. In identical race conditions (5-runner, 3yo handicaps), Rank 1 has produced a superb 33.1% strike-rate, with Rank 2 the clear next-best profile. The market and ratings therefore deserve maximum respect.

Top-rated is Sassicaia (IRE) on 312.8, narrowly ahead of Waterford Castle (IRE) on 309.0. However, the shape of the race may slightly favour the latter. Timeform specifically notes that the likely modest tempo “will probably detract from the chances of Devil’s Peak but not Waterford Castle”, which is significant. Waterford Castle has already shown tactical versatility in Comment Shaper data (TC → TC → FR → HU) and looks adaptable enough to sit handy in a race lacking pace.

The first-time cheekpieces are another positive. George Boughey’s colt has bumped into progressive rivals repeatedly this season and posted a strong latest-run figure (91.1 LR), comfortably the best recent performance in the field. Billy Loughnane should get an uncomplicated trip from stall 4.

Sassicaia remains the obvious danger. As the HRB Rank 1 horse with a strong “progressed” profile and untapped handicap potential, he fits the historical sweet spot perfectly. However, he may still be learning and lacks Waterford Castle’s tactical sharpness for a slowly-run Ascot handicap.

Sintra is respected on handicap debut and could trade shorter in-running if positioned prominently, but this may develop into a sprint finish that slightly exposes inexperience.

Selection: WATERFORD CASTLE (IRE)

Saver/Danger: Sassicaia (IRE)

Confidence: Medium-Strong
