This looks a fascinating 3yo handicap with the TimeWise Master ratings strongly pointing towards the top two, and the race shape likely to play a decisive role. Historical testing of these settings shows Rank 1 and Rank 2 dominate these races, so the focus should stay firmly with Silver State and Applesandpears.

Main Selection – APPLESANDPEARS

Although only ranked second on HRB, Applesandpears may get the perfect set-up. The Comment Shaper projects a very strong pace with high collapse risk, and that scenario looks ideal for a filly who repeatedly shaped as a strong late finisher. Her behavioural profile suggests she can sit off the speed and finish strongly if the leaders overdo things.

Timeform’s pace note is particularly interesting. They explicitly state the likely strong gallop could shift the advantage away from habitual pace angle Silver State and toward closers such as Blue To Blue. Applesandpears fits that same mould but arrives with far more upside and fewer questions.

Edward Bethell’s 16% strike-rate with handicap debutants adds confidence, and her profile screams improvement stepping up to a mile. Her Newcastle novice win suggested she had much more ability than the bare form, travelling smoothly before quickening decisively. Stall 10 is not ideal given Haydock’s draw data, but the anticipated pace collapse may negate that disadvantage if she is dropped in early.

Biggest Danger – SILVER STATE

The HRB Rank 1 horse commands respect. Four wins from his last five starts, visor retained, and clearly thriving. However, he is one of the likely pace contributors in a race forecast to be run aggressively. From stall 8 he may have to work hard early, and this is a stronger tactical scenario than the races he dominated previously.

Value Angle – BLUE TO BLUE

Huge odds for a horse identified by both Timeform and Comment Shaper as one of the strongest closers. Drawn low in stall 1 and likely to be played late. Interesting each-way outsider if the race collapses.
