3.40 Haydock – Pertemps Network Spring Trophy Stakes (Listed)

The TimeWise Master figures point very firmly towards LAKE FOREST, and the historical data for these settings strongly supports concentrating on the top two in the rankings. Rank 1 runners in Listed non-handicaps have produced a 25% strike-rate from 1,000 races, comfortably outperforming the rest, and Lake Forest is a clear top-rated here on 447.3 — a sizeable gap over Myal and Holguin.

William Haggas’ runner also brings the strongest established Group form. His second in the York Group 1 City of York Stakes last summer is comfortably the best piece of form in this field, and both Australian defeats can be forgiven given unsuitable conditions, particularly the heavy ground at Flemington. Returning to a Listed event represents a major class drop.

The Comment Shaper setup strengthens his case. Haydock’s 7f on good ground is expected to produce a very strong pace with two committed front runners and a high collapse risk. That scenario should heavily favour strong closers, and Lake Forest is identified as one of the strongest late finishers in the race. His usual hold-up style looks ideal if the pace develops as expected.

The obvious danger is Myal, the TimeWise Rank 2 horse. He arrives race-fit after beating Poet Master at Thirsk and has an excellent draw in stall 2 given Haydock’s low-draw bias. However, Comment Shaper raises a concern: under strong pressure he has shown a tendency to weaken late, which is not ideal in a race forecast to become attritional in the final furlong.

Ten Bob Tony commands respect after his C&D Listed win last season and solid Curragh reappearance, but his rating profile is slightly below the top selection and the draw in stall 5 is less advantageous than Lake Forest’s stall 4.

Holguin is interesting at a price as another strong closer, but the 301-day absence is a major negative.
