4.50 Leopardstown – Leopardstown Golf, Padel, Range Handicap

Selection: AKECHETA (IRE)

This looks a fascinating 1m2f handicap with a notably strong projected pace collapse, and that immediately brings the hold-up horses into play. From an HRB TimeWise perspective, the top three dominate the conversation, with Diamond Exchange narrowly top-rated, ahead of Genoah and Candleford Green. However, the race-shape data strongly suggests the contest may not be run to suit the likely pace pressers.

The key angle comes from the Comment Shaper summary: “Very Strong Shape” alongside a High Collapse Risk. Two front-runners and additional prominent racers should force an honest gallop. In these Leopardstown middle-distance handicaps, that can heavily favour strong closers.

That is why Akecheta appeals despite only ranking sixth on raw totals. He is specifically highlighted by Timeform as the horse most favoured by the expected pace scenario, while Comment Shaper awards him strong late-finisher status. His recent Curragh sixth in a stronger race was much better than the bare result, staying on late after unsuitable early positioning. Crucially, he now drops in grade from higher-class company and races from a career-low mark of 86.

The danger is obvious: Candleford Green has significant upside for Willie Mullins on handicap debut and fits the historical profile of lightly-raced improvers in this race. She is respected enormously and rates the main danger, especially from a favourable draw. However, after 202 days off and in what may become a tactical stamina test off a fierce pace, she could be vulnerable to a proven closer.

Diamond Exchange is respected as HRB Rank 1 and arrives in form, but both Timeform and the pace model suggest the projected race setup may work against her prominent racing style.

Verdict

A strongly-run race should play perfectly into the hands of AKECHETA, who looks poised to swoop late under L.T. McAteer.

Main danger: Candleford Green
Saver: Genoah

Confidence: MEDIUM-STRONG
