3.12 Southwell – Book The Bistro At Southwell Novices’ Handicap Chase

Selection: Dunkerque (DEN)

This looks a fascinating five-runner novice chase where the market may be overestimating the potential of chasing newcomers and underestimating the one runner bringing the strongest recent substance of form. HRB TimeWise Master ratings strongly favour Dunkerque, who is clear Rank 1 on 313.7, and under the historical HRB strike-rate model that immediately makes him the percentage call. Rank 1 horses dominate these races far more often than the market assumes, especially in small-field novice handicaps.

The Comment Shaper adds further support. Although there is no confirmed front-runner, the pace map suggests a moderately run contest with three prominent racers and low collapse risk. Dunkerque is marked as a strong late finisher and owns the best finishing profile in the field. In a tactical race lacking an aggressive pace angle, that ability to travel and finish strongly can prove decisive turning for home.

Timeform notes he achieved a career-best performance when winning at Newcastle last month over a similar trip on good ground. Importantly, he showed resilience under pressure, “just holding on”, which suggests he has developed mentally. His profile hints there may still be improvement to come now sent chasing for the first time. His HRB figures are notably well-rounded too, with a huge HRS figure (176.2) and strong speed component.

Seaview Rock is respected as the obvious danger. Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen boast excellent Southwell statistics and his pointing background offers encouragement for fences. However, he is only fourth on HRB ratings despite market leadership, and his latest effort raises concerns about temperament and finishing effort when pressure is applied.

Kara Sacre has ability but remains headstrong, while Rule Me In has repeatedly disappointed over fences despite favourable setups.

Verdict

Dunkerque (DEN) rates the most solid blend of ratings strength, race shape suitability and recent progression.

Confidence: Medium-Strong
