This looks a competitive Class 5 fillies’ handicap, but the HRB TimeWise ratings and Comment Shaper data narrow the race down considerably. Historically, the strongest angle in these races is to focus heavily on the top two TimeWise-ranked runners, and that immediately brings North West Gal and Betties Bay to the forefront.

North West Gal heads the ratings with a standout 310.5 total and an excellent recent profile for an unexposed 3yo entering handicaps for the first time. Her HRB figures are boosted by a powerful HRS component and a strong “Today” score, while Comment Shaper identifies her as one of the field’s strongest late finishers. That is particularly interesting given the projected strong pace scenario. With Miss Rainbow and Surprised likely to force the tempo, and several prominent racers adding pressure, this could set up perfectly for a filly finishing strongly off the pace. Her narrow defeat at Catterick last autumn also suggests the track suits.

Betties Bay is the obvious danger. Timeform are very positive about her since joining James Owen, and a four-timer is entirely plausible. She is ranked second on HRB and comes here thriving. However, Comment Shaper raises a slight concern: under pressure she has occasionally weakened late, and in a race forecast to be strongly run that vulnerability could be exposed in the closing stages, especially returning to turf after AW wins.

Of the others, Lily Pearl appeals most. She is another strong closer according to Comment Shaper and remains open to improvement after just four starts. The market respect is understandable, though the long absence slightly tempers confidence. Pull The Rug also has claims but may need the run after 206 days off.
