4.10 Hereford – 3m1½f Handicap Hurdle
This is a small-field staying hurdle where the shape looks nearly as important as the raw ratings. Catwalk Girl is the clear starting point. She is TimeWise Master Rank 1 on 318.5, comfortably clear of Campaign Trail on 296.2, and that matters because HRB’s top rank is historically the strongest source of winners. She also gets a notable tactical boost from Comment Shaper, which identifies her as the sole likely front runner in a race with only moderate pressure and low collapse risk. In a five-runner contest around Hereford, that could be a major edge.
Her recent profile is progressive. She fell on handicap hurdle debut at Ludlow when still involved, then returned to win a 3m handicap chase at Huntingdon by 12 lengths just five days ago. She now goes back over hurdles from the same mark of 104, and the addition of first-time cheekpieces could sharpen her up further. She looks the one most likely to get a soft lead and control matters.
Campaign Trail is the obvious saver. He is Rank 2, which fits the usual HRB winner bias, and Timeform’s pace note says a slowly-run race should suit those racing handily. He was a respectable third at Southwell and drops in grade here. The worry is that Comment Shaper flags him as one who can weaken late, and over this trip that is not ideal if Catwalk Girl gets into a rhythm.
Heard That has first-time blinkers and Sean Bowen, which makes him mildly interesting, especially with strong late-finisher signals, but he is only the third choice on the numbers and arrives with a mixed profile. Border Gem and I Am Spider Man both have late-running angles, but this race may not be run to suit.
Verdict: Catwalk Girl
Saver/alternative: Campaign Trail
Self-critique: the biggest concern is the quick turnaround after Huntingdon and the switch back from fences to hurdles. If she fails to dominate early, Campaign Trail becomes much more dangerous.
Confidence: Medium-strong.
