4.23 Bath – Clyde And Co Handicap (1m2f)
This looks a fascinating tactical race despite the small field, with the likely steady gallop a major factor. Comment Shaper and Timeform both point towards a weak pace scenario, and that immediately brings positioning and tactical speed into play.
The HRB TimeWise ratings strongly favour Galaxy Wonder, who sits clear on top with a total of 307.3. Given the excellent historical strike-rate of Rank 1 runners, especially in small-field handicaps, he deserves maximum respect. His recent profile is rock-solid too: two wins from his last three starts and a particularly impressive Bath success last time where he beat a subsequent winner. The “race worked out” note from Timeform adds substance to the form.
Comment Shaper highlights him as a strong late finisher, though there is a slight concern regarding the projected pace. In a slowly-run race, hold-up horses can become vulnerable if they concede first run. However, Galaxy Wonder is versatile enough tactically — his recent run-style history includes racing prominently and even forcing the pace. That flexibility is important here.
The danger is clearly Prodigal Son, the TimeWise Rank 3 horse but one with compelling pace support. Timeform specifically notes the likely tactical setup should favour prominent racers, and he shaped very well when winning here over a mile on firm ground recently. The step up in trip looks logical on pedigree, the blinkers remain, and Heather Main’s positive stats with horses stepped up in distance strengthen confidence. Rossa Ryan is another positive in a race where tactical awareness matters greatly.
Criminal has first-time cheekpieces and arrives after a near miss at Lingfield, but his tendency to start slowly is a real negative in a race lacking pace. Party Island and Premier are both strong finishers but may find the tempo against them.
