Selection: FACTUAL FACT (FR)
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings immediately point towards Factual Fact as the percentage call. He is narrowly clear on total figures (310.3) and, crucially, sits in the all-important Rank 1 slot, which historically supplies the bulk of winners in these races. His profile is solid rather than flashy, but this looks a contest lacking depth and tactical pace, which may play perfectly into his hands.
Comment Shaper suggests a very weakly-run race with no confirmed front runner and minimal early pressure. In these scenarios, positioning becomes vital. Timeform specifically notes that a slow pace should favour horses ridden handily, and Factual Fact is expected to be better placed than several of his chief rivals. That is a major positive because many of the dangers — notably Dark Note, Riyami and even Winning Smut — are stronger late finishers who may struggle if the race develops into a sprint from the home bend.
His Curragh comeback second reads very well in context. He travelled strongly on heavy ground over 1m4f and was left with too much to do late. The step up to 2m1f looks likely to suit based on both hurdle and bumper form. Henry de Bromhead’s runner also owns one of the strongest “late” profiles in Comment Shaper, suggesting there is still untapped stamina upside on the Flat.
The obvious threat is Winning Smut, the clear Rank 2 on HRB and potentially well treated from hurdle ratings for Gordon Elliott. However, he returns to the Flat after a long absence in the sphere and may be inconvenienced by the likely tactical nature of the race.
Harry’s Legacy and Slurricane are respected for place purposes, while Dark Note appeals as the overpriced closer if the pace unexpectedly lifts.
Verdict
Factual Fact ticks the key boxes: top HRB rank, favourable race shape, strong recent run and likely improvement for the trip.
