York 3.30 – Go Local Stores Minster Stakes (Group 2)
Selection: KIND OF BLUE
Saver: AMERICAN AFFAIR
The HRB TimeWise ratings immediately point us toward Cool Hoof Luke (Rank 1) and American Affair (Rank 2), with the model historically favouring the top two very strongly in these races. However, this looks a race where the projected pace scenario could completely alter the usual hierarchy.
Comment Shaper and Timeform are aligned that this will be run at a furious gallop. Four confirmed front-runners — Cool Hoof Luke, Regional, Quinault and Diligent Harry — create a “Very Strong Shape” with a high collapse risk. York’s straight 6f can punish aggressive pace battles, especially on quick ground when leaders overdo it early.
That immediately raises doubts about Cool Hoof Luke despite the excellent HRB figure. He has tactical speed and York course form, but he may be caught in the firing line of an unsustainably strong pace. The same concern applies to Regional and Quinault.
This setup looks ideal for a closer, and Kind Of Blue is the standout late finisher in the field according to Comment Shaper. His profile screams “Group sprinter waiting for the right setup”. The Ascot flop last autumn is easy enough to forgive, while his Haydock Sprint Cup second to Big Mojo is top-class form in the context of this race. James Fanshawe excels with patient sprinters returning fresh, and James Doyle is excellent at timing late runs on the Knavesmire.
American Affair is feared most. Ranked second on HRB and specifically highlighted by Timeform as a likely beneficiary of the pace collapse, he has an explosive turn of foot and proven York form. The slight concern is whether 6f on seasonal return stretches him against proven Group 1-calibre six-furlong horses.
Time For Sandals commands respect receiving the sex allowance and should improve for Newmarket, but her likely tracking position may leave her vulnerable if the pace completely implodes late.
Verdict
The ratings say Cool Hoof Luke, but the race shape strongly favours a closer.
Kind Of Blue gets the vote to swoop late.
