3.43 Perth – Murrayshall Cairns Handicap Chase Preview
This looks a fairly typical low-grade Perth staying chase where race shape and reliability could prove decisive. The HRB TimeWise ratings strongly point towards The Flying Poet and that immediately carries weight given the excellent historical strike rate of Rank 1 horses in these races.
The Flying Poet (Rank 1 – 322.8) has a significant ratings edge and arrives from a yard that excels at Perth. Olly Murphy operates at a 35% strike-rate here, while Sean Bowen is equally potent around this track. The horse won over course and distance last September and the return to Perth is a major positive. The switch to fences after a break is the only slight concern, but Comment Shaper flags him as a strong late finisher in what could become a pressured race up front. With Jirko and Burgundy Man likely forcing the pace, the setup may collapse late and play perfectly into his stalking style.
Sir Carnegie (Rank 2 – 280.3) is the obvious danger. He arrives race-fit after a solid C&D second and is extremely consistent. Comment Shaper identifies him as another strong closer and his profile is rock-solid for this level. However, he may be vulnerable if the pace turns tactical rather than strongly run, and HRB still has him some way behind the selection.
Aill Dubh is respected after his Newcastle win but Comment Shaper raises a major concern: he often weakens late and now faces a stronger pace environment from a higher mark. That tempers enthusiasm despite his improving profile.
Timeform’s pace forecast suggesting a weaker gallop slightly favours Jirko, but his jumping remains unreliable and that is difficult to ignore around Perth’s fences.
Verdict
The ratings, track trends, trainer statistics and projected race shape all align strongly with THE FLYING POET. He looks the runner with the most upside and the best finishing profile in the field.
