4.05 York – Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 3)
Selection: LEGACY LINK
Saver: FELICITAS
The Musidora often throws up an Oaks contender and this year’s renewal revolves around the top two in the HRB TimeWise Master rankings bias, even though Sea The Storm narrowly tops the raw totals. The key here is balancing ratings with profile, pace and developmental upside.
Legacy Link looks the most likely winner. Her fourth in the Fillies’ Mile has worked out exceptionally well, with horses around her boosting the form in Classic company, and the step up from a mile to 1m2½f looks tailor-made. Being out of a 1½m-winning sister to Frankel and Noble Mission screams middle-distance improvement. The Gosdens target this race superbly and have won it twice in the last decade.
From the Comment Shaper data, she is expected to track the pace in what could become a steadily-run tactical affair. That is important because York’s Musidora can favour fillies positioned close to the speed when the tempo is modest. Timeform’s pace note specifically suggested Della Pace may get caught too far back, whereas Legacy Link should secure the ideal stalking trip.
There is a slight concern regarding her lack of experience at this trip and the low confidence behavioural profile (“unpredictable”), but her strong-finisher comments and pedigree offset that. She also owns the best recent single-run figure in the field.
Felicitas is feared most. She arrives unbeaten, has a powerful staying pedigree and looked highly progressive at Sandown. HRB Rank 2 horses are historically the main danger to Rank 1 selections and she fits that pattern perfectly. If Legacy Link lacks tactical sharpness after 215 days off, Felicitas could capitalise late.
Sea The Storm deserves respect as the HRB top-rated horse and arrives improving for Haggas, but her form depth is just shy of the principals. Moments Of Joy may get an uncontested lead but looked vulnerable late previously and the hood suggests they are seeking extra focus.
Verdict
